As I was standing in line at the local Subway today, I was reminded of one of my pet hates-people talking on mobile phones while being served!
In previous incarnations I have been a "waitress" and a "check-out-chick" and know that these people are in fact ... human beings. They do actually notice when people don't have the courtesy to hang up the mobile phone and they do feel offended that you can't give them your attention for the 30 seconds it takes to serve you.
Hanging up the mobile before walking into a store shows respect for that store owner as a fellow human being. We all want to feel seen and acknowledged and not treated like a robot with no feelings.
It also pays to remember that the primary satisfaction that an employee gets from a customer service role is interaction with the customer. This is what makes the day interesting and rewarding.
So,the next time you walk into a store, hang up the mobile phone, give the attendant a big smile and have a quick chat, it might just make their day and yours!
